Why we started

Made for real homes, real routines and real daily handling

Shine Without Limits was created by Gareth and Vicky, a UK family with lived experience of autism, visual supports and everyday communication needs. Gareth is a stay-at-home dad, maker and parent of two autistic children. Vicky works alongside non-verbal children in the care community and has seen first-hand how important clear visual supports can be in daily routines, choices and communication.

The idea started when Vicky noticed that laminated visual cards, although useful, did not always survive real life. When children handled them regularly, they could fold, peel at the corners, get soggy when wet, or become damaged through everyday use.

Vicky asked Gareth if he could try making a stronger 3D printed version. Gareth began experimenting with simple everyday cards such as toilet, drink and park. The first cards were basic, but they were stronger, tactile and easier to handle.

After Vicky’s colleagues saw the cards and asked about them, Gareth began printing small bundles, often around 20 cards on a keyring. A few custom cards were then sold through Vinted, and with encouragement, ideas and support from family, friends and the care community, Shine Without Limits was born.

Shine Without Limits is not a giant supplier, a therapy service, or an official PECS® training provider. It is a small family-led project built from lived experience, practical problem-solving and a genuine wish to make communication a little easier for children, families and settings.

Will it become a huge success? We do not know. But if these cards can make daily routines clearer, reduce frustration, or help even one child be understood a little more easily, then that matters. From one parent to another, thank you for supporting Shine Without Limits.
